A Brief Look at Cane Grove, Guyana

A transportation and logistics professional with more than a decade of experience, Joseph Algoo serves as chief executive officer and president of Diversified Transport & Logistics Inc. in Monroe, New Jersey. Each year, Joseph Algoo travels to Cane Grove, Guyana, to donate computers, books, and other supplies to a library he built in honor of his late father.

Located in the Demerara-Mahaica region of the South American country of Guyana, Cane Grove is an agricultural community of approximately 1,500 permanent residents. The site is the location of a former sugar plantation, which, until its closing in 1946, employed more than 12,000 individuals. Supposedly in existence since the early 1800s, the village’s first settlers were reportedly immigrants from East India.

Today, most Cane Grove residents make their living from agriculture. The picturesque village is surrounded by rice fields and large trees, although the dirt roads can make the village difficult to reach during the rainy season. The small village has a post office and police station, as well as schools, shops, and administrative offices.
